Welcome to the website of the Sai Kung District Office.
Sai Kung is renowned as the “Back Garden of Hong Kong”, with spectacular scenery embracing numerous exotic islands and lush green hills. The Tseung Kwan O New Town, which also forms part of Sai Kung, represents the vibrant and contemporary side of the district. The integration of rural tranquility and urban vibrancy offers a community of high versatility and vitality.
The abundant ecological resources in Sai Kung have created favourable conditions for the district for developing family tourism and eco-tourism. The rugged and sinuous coastline, attractive bays and beaches, together with various spots with historical interests, offer not only a panoramic view, but also a different kind of travelling experience to local and overseas tourists. With rich natural endowments and cultural heritage, promotion of tourism has been one of the main focuses of development in Sai Kung.
On the other hand, with the Government putting in substantial resources for the Tseung Kwan O New Town, infrastructural, community, cultural and recreational facilities have been developed to meet the needs of more than 400 000 local residents. For instance, the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground was opened in May 2009. Being a new sports ground of international standard, it is the main venue for track and field events of the 2009 East Asian Games. The next few years will see the completion of more major cultural and recreational projects in the district, in particular the Town Park and Indoor Velodrome-cum-Sports Centre in Area 45, the Open Space, Indoor Recreation Centre and Library in Area 74, and the Government complex in Area 44. These new developments will provide local residents with improved facilities which will better cater for their needs.
The Sai Kung District Office will continue to enhance the coordination of the services of the government departments in the district to ensure effective district governance. The Government is committed to fostering better communication with the District Council and responding actively to the needs of local residents. Though with different backgrounds and beliefs, members of Sai Kung District Council (SKDC) have all along worked in close partnership with various government departments with the common objective of promoting the well-being of the district community, and ensuring that the services provided cater for the needs of local residents.
During the last term of the District Council, Sai Kung has been selected as one of the four districts to run a pilot scheme on enhanced functions of District Councils. The pilot scheme has brought to the SKDC with challenges, cultural changes, new mindset and new ideas. Nevertheless, with the common goal of benefiting the community at large, the Council has been able to reach compromise and consensus on many issues through concerted efforts and enhanced communications. Under the pilot scheme, SKDC members and government departments have worked hand in hand to provide the district with more cultural and recreational facilities, and implement community partnership programmes to meet district needs.
We shall continue to strengthen district governance through better coordinating the services of the government departments at the district level, with the aim of enhancing district administration and most importantly, further improving the livelihood of people, providing them with an even better living environment.
