Sichuan Emergency Relief
An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale struck the province of Sichuan on 12 May 2008. Thousands were killed, many more injured and widespread destruction is reported.
Immediately after the Sichuan Wenchuan earthquake, the Home Affairs Department has put in place a mechanism to channel donations from Hong Kong citizens for emergency relief operations by collecting donations through the "The Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated – Donations" account and then distributing the donations received to five relief organizations, namely Hong Kong Red Cross, World Vision Hong Kong, Oxfam Hong Kong, United Nations Children's Fund and the Salvation Army.
As at 31 July 2008, more than $200 million in donations had been collected through the account of "The Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated - Donations" for the Sichuan emergency relief.
